I have been very successful in tutoring ACT, SAT, ISEE, and GRE.... The Socratic method, asking open-ended questions, is an excellent strategy to get a student to talk. When the tutor can speak less and encourage the tutee to speak more, the tutor can identify the student's level of understanding.
