What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching is gauged by the comprehension of the student. If one knows something well, they can help another understand it in terms beneficial for the learner!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to get an idea of the student's comfort level with the material, and whether or not the student recognizes exactly which hurdles to overcome.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I always encourage the student to help solve the problems once they seem to understand the underlying concepts. Doing so is beneficial, because the student gets in the habit of solving problems themselves, yet, if they need to be guided through the problem, they won't be discouraged by the attempt. The best thing is to have the student internalize that they can solve the problems at hand.
