Certified Tutor

I graduated with honors from Austin College in January 2012 with a double major in International Relations and French.

I am passionate about current events and have worked for political campaigns after graduation. I was active in Model United Nations during college, and I especially enjoyed studying the Middle East, North Africa, and South America.

I also was a French major, studied abroad in France for an academic year and in French-speaking Switzerland for a semester. I was invited to join Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honors Society, for my performance in French.

I love writing and and enjoy helping other students write and edit papers. I wrote a 30-page research paper on the international security implications of fissile material production and wrote a paper on the Arab Spring under supervision of my professor. I was also a yearbook editor.

I look forward to helping you customize a study schedule and working with you to accomplish your goals!

What is your teaching philosophy?

It has to be fun and memorable to stick with you.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension is best practiced every day. We could start with topics that were enjoyable to the student. It's important to examine how context and structure give you clues about the main idea and author's opinions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Talk to them about what has helped them in the past/ ways to customize it to their interests. Find some aspect of the subject that the student enjoys, or find a way to relate it to the student's passions.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Be clear during our sessions and ask for honest feedback. Be available to answer questions outside of our meetings.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By making the lesson fun and by gradually making the assignments harder. Real confidence is gained when the student sees themselves learning.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Have an open conversation during our first session about your goals for our time together. Set measurable ways to track progress so that we can monitor the success of our sessions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I start by asking about your needs and goals. I am always open for feedback and happy to change techniques when something isn't working.
