PCAT Biology Tutoring FAQ
Pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree can be a challenging undertaking, but perhaps the biggest hurdle you will face is the admissions process. To stand out from the crowd, you will need to present admissions boards with an exceptional score on the PCAT, or Pharmacy College Admissions Test. In particular, admissions boards expect applicants to earn high scores on the Biology section of the exam, as this subscore is most commonly representative of the coursework students have previously encountered in their undergraduate studies. Despite the familiarity of this material, the breadth of topics covered on the PCAT Biology section can make adequate preparation seem overwhelming. If you are determined to improve your score, but find yourself in need of some help in structuring and directing your review, a PCAT Biology tutor can provide you with the support you need.
Building your repertoire of test-taking skills and conceptual knowledge may seem repetitive. You likely faced similar, equally rigorous review prior to applying to your undergraduate program. Many students find, however, that their experience with standardized testing quickly faded during their collegiate studies. Working with a personal instructor can help you identify exactly where your greatest strengths and weaknesses lie, both with regard to the knowledge of biological concepts you will need to demonstrate and to the pressures of the standardized testing environment. Your PCAT Biology tutoring sessions can be structured to specifically address any concerns that you have and zero in on the concepts that trouble you the most.
Both in-person and face-to-face online tutoring have a range of benefits, including improving academic performance and providing more practice time to hone your abilities. The aforementioned would be described as immediate benefits. However, there are also rewards that can be impactful later on in your academic career. One of the long-term rewards of tutoring is the development of better study habits. Study skills are often learned. One important facet of private instruction involves the development of said skills. Here, you can learn how to take proper notes. You'll discover how to effectively make and use flash cards, and highlight important details. Understanding how to utilize these tools provides lifelong benefits that are applicable to a range of settings, from college to the workplace.

Recent PCAT Biology Tutoring Session Notes
We began by discussing general prep book information. The student ordered a electronic version of the prep book as well as a vocabulary tool. We began by working through a diagnostic test in order to give me a feel for her general strengths and weaknesses. I assigned a variety of the arithmetic and algebra chapters problems, as well as a section of graph / chart interpretation questions. Also, I assigned sets of problems from the vocabulary-related verbal sections and one issue prompt.
In this session we continued to study formulas, functions, and sequences. We went over how to find the equation of line, how to find the sum of a sequence, and how to work with odd symbols in functions. He picked it up with help from me.
The student and I went over some of the practice questions she had trouble with (in one of her GRE test prep books). We then discussed probability and combinations and permutations. I went over the concepts and also some of the most likely to appear question types. She also completed several practice questions on those topics.
Fantastic news -- the student was accepted into her dream school without even needing to take the GRE. She still has to take it as a formality, but she's already in! We studied for a bit, but the pressure is off for her. We covered a bit of vocab and a few math questions just so that she'll feel a bit more comfortable on the actual test.
We began the session with corrections. I had sent the student a link to a worksheet covering exponents, simplifying multivariate expressions using the rules of exponents. He did well on the ones he had managed to complete ahead of time. I clarified how to deal with negative exponents and what allows one to decide whether the multiplication and division or addition and subtraction rules apply. We then went through a diagnostic set and completed test corrections based of that. For next session, I assigned a diagnostic set to be completed at home.
The student and I went over the quantitative reasoning section. We took care to focus on percentages and geometry. He has some trouble with algebra, so we also reviewed some of the quick ways to do algebra. We also went over systems of equations, specifically the techniques of substitution, addition/subtraction elimination.
