1st Grade Writing Tutoring FAQ
With your child just beginning to learn the skill of writing sentences, it may seem early to worry about the details of composition and grammar. However, as the old maxim goes: Parvus error in principiis, magnus error in conclusionibus. This can be roughly translated as, A small error at the beginning of an undertaking creates a large one at its conclusion. In other words, only a strong foundation today can support a bright future. Make sure that your child's early language acquisition fosters crisp, articulate communication. Contact 51Թ today and let us help you connect with a first grade writing tutor who can help your child develop the best writing skills possible at this early stage of his or her learning.
All language acquisition has a mixture of verbal and written aspects, as well as passive and active ones. Even if your child can speak very well and likewise has reading skills that meet or exceed his or her grade level, it is still necessary to make sure that he or she is able to write clearly. The extra level of connection between spoken and written word requires an important exercise of thoughtfulness and care. Such care is only learned by a concerted application of teaching and attention, which private writing tutoring can help provide.
Such skills are best taught to a child one-on-one, not in the mixed environment of a classroom. Certainly, the basic concepts of these skills can be imparted to a student during the normal hours of school instruction. However, the acquisition of language skills is such an intimate affair that it is best taught by someone who is well informed about your child's strengths, weaknesses, and interests. This can be difficult to achieve in a classroom setting because your child's teacher most likely does not really have enough time to focus on individual students. A private tutor can identify exactly where your child is having difficulties and develop a plan to combat his or her weaknesses.
Reading is such an important skill because it is something that people use every day. One of the best ways to ensure that your child succeeds both academically and in life is to help them develop a love of reading. Reading will certainly help them in their academic pursuits as it crosses over into every academic subject, but it can also help them from a personal standpoint because it fosters imagination and creativity. An engaging and personable tutor can help your child learn to love reading and reap all the benefits that come with that.
Your child's tutor can help you target your students burgeoning skills of expression and help to develop them into articulate writing. By correcting any early confusions or errors, you can potentially prevent a number of continued problems in years to come as the expectations for your child's writing become increasingly demanding. From citing the name of a book to crafting simple narrative paragraphs, skilled and experienced tutors possess the knowledge and teaching ability to support your child's academic journey. The ability to communicate well is imperative in today's society. Why leave such important matters to chance? Contact the 51Թ office in your area today to find out more about how we can help you and your child connect with a first grade writing tutor. Deep foundations today can make for great success tomorrow.
51Թ' live learning platform allows you and your child to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This enables you to have the freedom and flexibility to choose the time and place that is best for you and your child. Recent 1st Grade Writing Tutoring Session Notes
We spent the session reviewing and revising the student's practice timed essay for the non-fiction book Deadly Choices. She had completed the introduction and first body paragraph before our lesson, and we improved the writing and streamlined the thesis and supporting arguments. She wrote the second body paragraph in-session and we improved it in the same fashion before working on the conclusion together. I suggested that she include more detail from this book than she would from a novel, where it would be construed as 'plot summarizing'; in this case, her teacher has not read the book and some points of her essay were too vague to allow the reader to understand her argument fully. I gave her another practice prompt from this book to give her more practice. This assignment may take place on Wednesday, unless it is pushed back to next semester.
In order to gauge what needed to be reviewed, we went over a sample language arts multiple choice test. As we went through the questions, we reviewed general multiple choice test taking techniques and also focused on sentence revision. As far as sentence revision goes, we focused heavily on punctuation and usage, including fragment sentences, comma splices, run-on sentences, and semi-colons. The student seems quite comfortable with the format of the multiple choice test and caught on quickly. He doesn't seem to have a problem scoring at least 4 out of 5 of the questions right.
Today's session went well. The student and I focused on his reading comprehension questions for his English class. He is getting better at forming sentences using correct grammar. He is also getting better at explaining his answers. We also continued on with his vocabulary quiz and providing a paraphrased definition of the words provided in his lessons.
In this session, we worked on an essay assignment that the student had. He had to write about the most interesting aspect of the play thus far (till act II). He decided to focus on the relationship between the father, Orgon and Tartuffe and how Orgon was blindly obsessed with his friend. I made the student outline his essay into a 5 point paragraph, which helped plan which examples he was going to use. Overall, he did a good job with the essay.
We did a small sight word spelling test. She made 90%. We worked with a sounding out activity. We worked for a short time with beginning consonants then moved to beginning consonant blends. (Sh,sl,ch,th,wh,ph) we wrote a short story and she wrote a few sentences she made herself.
This session rocked. I was so proud of the student.
I wanted to get him writing in the least fear-inducing way possible, so I told him he had three minutes and he could write anything he wanted. He got nervous that he had to write a book and I told him to write the easiest words--cat, dog, and--and to just go from there. He did, and then I gave him 5 minutes and then 10 minutes and he rose to the challenge beautifully. At points he asked for more time, and he wrote more words. We spent a good 50 minutes just writing, and he underlined the words he was unsure of as he went along.
