Certified Tutor

Recent UMass Amherst graduate with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Russian. I worked as a tutor in college for mostly college-aged students, but have also worked with younger students in the past. Currently tutoring in SAT preparation, AP English Lit, Geometry, English, Russian, and others listed. I understand that every students works best at their own pace and in their own way, and try to incorporate that philosophy into my tutoring sessions.

Favorite course to tutor would most likely be Russian. I'm very interested in the language and culture, and enjoy sharing that with students. Outside interests include Russian literature, biking, traveling, Game of Thrones and Siberian Huskies.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone learns in their own way/at their own pace. The job of a tutor is not to think for you, but to guide you.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It is important to first get acclimated. I'd like to learn some things about the student that will help me get a better sense of which methods will work best; this includes trying out different learning methods and seeing which ones receive the best responses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Allow the student to think for themselves and work out problems on their own. The tutor is meant to guide and explain, not to dole out answers.
