What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in addressing a student's needs in a way that is both practical and meaningful for them. Helping students develop self-reliance and their critical thinking skills is something that I have seen benefit students in the long term of their academic careers.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I first try and connect with a student and to understand what they feel or think is difficult for them about their particular study. I then start to implement simple ways to get them to feel more confident. I simplify what they are learning, so they can be comfortable and not overwhelmed. Once we have a foundation, they can build up to their potential.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching a student how to learn in terms of process, and also addressing how each student learns best. For example, some students are aural learners while others need more hands-on experience.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I use creativity to help students find a way that they can understand and use confidently.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I help students relate to practical experiences as to personalize what they are reading. When they connect, they start seeing progress.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to develop short term and long term goals that we set together.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

This is often remedied by making the material more accessible and relatable.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I often assign short reviews for them or play games whereby they can demonstrate their understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I find that helping them see the simple parts that comprise the big picture is very useful.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I have students do a small self-evaluation with me, and we discuss where they tend to have issues or get overwhelmed/disconnect.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I work with how the student learns best, and as their confidence and independence builds, we start moving towards the more common practices.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use visual aids quite often.
