2nd Grade Tutoring FAQ
Although the increased difficulty of material taught in the second-grade classroom can seem arbitrary to an adult, the change is palpable to a young student. Mathematics with multi-digit numbers emphasizes the necessity of mental math, reducing their dependence on counting. Reading grade-appropriate books and stories can help develop vocabulary skills and the ability to infer meaning from texts. Writing assignments begin to shift toward a more opinion-based approach, requiring students to add reasons and because statements to their compositions. In essence, kindergarten and first grade help establish fundamental principles for education second grade begins the process of applying those skills in an academic context.
If you are concerned about your child's performance in second grade, a personal tutor may be able to help. Whether your student struggles with some of the foundational concepts from previous classes, has difficulty applying previous material to new situations, or perhaps is bored in class and eager for more advanced coursework than is offered at their school, a highly skilled and experienced private tutor can help construct a learning plan to keep your child engaged and on track.
A tutor will cater to your child's unique needs and academic situation, tailoring his or her second grade tutoring sessions to best benefit him or her. This is not always possible in a classroom setting because your child's teacher simply doesn't have the time to focus on individual students. This is where a private tutor can be beneficial because they can give your child as much time as they need to fully understand a particular topic.
Your child's tutor can take note of specific learning habits and strategies that work well for your child, as well as his or her academic interests. By using a one-on-one approach, tutors are able to evaluate your students particular position and custom-design lessons that can best help him or her find academic success. At that age, it can be somewhat difficult to identify what exactly your child's learning style is because they may not be able to fully articulate that information. An experienced tutor can give you a better idea of what your child's strengths and weaknesses are and help you develop a plan that will help your child in their current classes and throughout their academic career.
The skills developed in elementary school are crucial tools upon which future coursework will build. Second grade tutoring can help your child establish a strong foundation in these core concepts, which can lead to success down the line. Not only are the academic principles of elementary education central pieces in your child's development, but the attitude and atmosphere of early education can shape your child's relationship with academia for years to come. Boredom, frustration, aggravation, or loss of interest early in your child's schooling can set the tone for future classes. 51Թ can help you select a tutor to help focus your child's educational experience, keeping him or her engaged and interested while promoting comprehension over dejection and irritation. Your child's tutor works to make tutoring as positive as possible for your second grader.
51Թ' live learning platform allows you and your child to meet with a private tutor in person or face-to-face online. We read two short stories. The student completed a reading fluency exam which resulted in him reading 120 words per minute.
We also reviewed spelling words. He was able to spell all of the words given to him. He was left with a reading comprehension assignment
Today we worked on a reading comprehension piece, addition with 2-digit regrouping and began work on solar system project. The student received high marks on his reading and math. He struggled with remembering to start at the right of the problem and not the left. Practiced note taking skills from watching a video on the solar system.
Today, we worked on spelling out words after looking at pictures (reverse of sounding out a word when reading it) and we also worked on drilling addition and subtraction problems. Finally, we learned some skills for doing subtraction and addition with two digit numbers.
The student and I started by reading a passage together. I asked her to underline the words she knew, and I helped her with the words that she did not know. I also brought sight words for her to read. The student needs help with her decoding skills, so we reviewed the words in her notebook. She and I played a game where we use our ten vocabulary words to guess which the other person has by giving clues about the word. We completed a mathematics game using a dice. We covered topics like greater than/less than, simple addition/subtraction, and word problems. She has homework to complete, including writing her words three times each and sentences of her vocabulary words. For next week, I will help her by using a website that is fun for kids.
The student and I covered phonics, spelling, subtraction, vocabulary, and multiplication. The student struggles most with spelling. I left the student 2 sheets to study focusing on spelling and vocabulary.
