Recent IB Geography SL Tutoring Session Notes
Today, the student and I worked on more assessment review. She took three review quizzes (Native Americans and European Exploration, Colonial Georgia, and the American Revolution) and then we discussed the questions that she missed. As we talked through the questions, we realized that she missed them due to not reading the questions carefully. Once we re-read the questions, she was able to identify the correct answer. There were also a few questions that she had not covered in class yet, but I explained to her that there will be some questions on the assessment that she will not know. She needs to be comfortable answering questions that she is unfamiliar with. I also spent time talking to the student and her mother about courses for next year.
Reviewed significant people from Colonial period through Reconstruction and categorized them by contribution. Began outline and pre-writing for final essay. Labeled significant geographical features of the continental United States.
Assigned two more ACT vocab sheets for next session. The student's mother would like copies or originals of pretests in both English and Social Studies to mark "home schooling" progress. We will finish up all Social Studies content in the next two sessions together. At that point, she will complete an online 8th grade Social Studies culminating final, and the remainder of our sessions will focus strictly on English.
The student completed 2/3 of the English homework, getting stuck on the 3rd part of the essay on Edgar Allen Poe. The third part asks her to discuss his poems and writing style. She had written on tone, so we added rhyme, symbols, theme, and repetition. Then she added a few favorite quotes (required), and concluded. The piece still remaining is for her to write a narrative poem on Jackie Robinson. For the remaining hour, we worked on postcards assignment in Ancient Civ. She was to write 5 postcards home from various ancient Roman ruins. We listened to audio lectures, took note, and wrote the postcards. As our time ended, she was ready to submit assignment.
The student and I finished his math and social studies homework. His math was about measuring and using appropriate units. It was a straightforward assignment and he completed it quickly and with very little difficulty. His social studies homework took much more time and effort because it required writing extended responses to some review questions for the chapter he has been working on, Ancient Greece. We worked together to write comprehensive and well-organized paragraphs, with introduction sentences, specific details, and a conclusion. He did fairly well with this more structured approach to writing, and we will try to do the same thing in the future.
I met with the student on May 1st. He had been sick the day before so we worked on the assignments he missed. After we completed the reading assignment he missed, I asked brief questions to check his comprehension and understanding of the chapter. We worked on an extra credit writing assignment on Pizarro. He did not do any reading journal entries and he will try to do at least two before our next meeting. I think the reading journal entries (just two to three sentences per entry) will really help him and I look forward to seeing what he writes next week.
We worked on his Social Studies assignment regarding the 1960s to 1970s, especially focusing on Vietnam.
He then had a couple of problems with his mathematics (geometry rotations, translation, and reflections).
