Taylor

Certified Tutor

I am a recent graduate from Truman State University where I earned a degree in biology. Biology, including ecology and environmental science, is my favorite subject to tutor since it teaches us how to be more aware of the wonders of the world we live in. It is also a very hands-on subject so I believe it's best taught by engaging in small projects and experiments rather than through lecture.
During my time at Truman I conducted research in psychology on two different research teams. With one team I studied the effects that heart rate has on one's physical and mental health. On the other team I helped to conduct research on cognitive effects of subliminal priming.
In high school I competed for my school's debate and forensics team and also took part in model united nations.
In my free time I like to keep up with the latest in environmental news and go hiking. For fun I like to explore other cultures through learning to cook or bake different food. I also enjoy crocheting and I'm currently working on my biggest project to date - a full-sized blanket.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To me, effective teaching not only conveys knowledge, but also motivates students to want to learn more. When you are able to show how much you care about a subject, you can more easily get others just as interested. Especially in the sciences, relating information in real-world experiences and through hands-on activities is much better than reciting formulas or charts. Students should get that "how" and "why" concepts are important, rather than just a list of facts to memorize.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I'd like to review what sort of past experience students have with the subject or material that we'd be working on. It is also important to me to establish what sorts of ways the student learns best and figure out how I can best meet our learning objectives.
