I believe it is important to help students learn, understand, and apply their knowledge to be able to perform better in their classes. This starts by explaining material in ways that might be different than they might see in classes or textbooks and finding practical applications to tie into the subject.

I have been tutoring students for the past 7 years during both my undergraduate and graduate (M.S. Organic Chemistry) studies in addition to 3 years of classroom teaching experience. I understand chemistry can be a challenging subject for many students but it doesn't have to be. Better understanding chemistry often involves learning new strategies and approaches to solve chemical problems to make it easier for the student.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching students is about discovering a way of helping students understand material that doesn't seem like work. Learning should be an enriching and fulfilling process where teachers should be students' guide.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with a student, it is important to understand what the student has done to study and what did or did not work in the past, both in terms of study and review strategies. Everyone is different, so specific approaches are necessary to best help a student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students all learn in different ways, and helping a student become an independent learner means helping them to study in a way that they can best process and store knowledge they are learning from class, textbooks, or tutoring. This starts with finding ways the student learns best and teaching them strategies to approach the material with those strengths in mind.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Helping a student to stay motivated starts with finding out exactly what motivates them (grades, passing a class, etc.). Reminding them of the importance of those goals and offering supportive encouragement goes a long way. Having a student keep an eye on upcoming exams, quizzes or other assessments in the short term gives further motivation towards the final goal.
