If you believe your student could benefit from some extra instruction when it comes to preparing for the SSAT, don't hesitate to reach out to 51Թ so that we can get your student started with a Louisville SSAT class. The SSAT is a test that is used by many private and independent schools as a part of their admissions process. Overall, the test looks at the math, verbal, and reading skills of students who are interested in attending private or independent schools. These skills are considered to be good predictors of how well a student will perform once they're attending the school. As such, your student can likely boost their chances of getting into a private or independent school by performing well on this test.
The SSAT is given to students at three different age groups and has three distinct levels. These include an Elementary Level, a Middle Level, and an Upper Level. The Elementary Level test is offered to students in 3rd and 4th grade. The Middle Level is offered to students between 5th and 7th grades, and the Upper Level test is offered to students between 8th and 11th grades.
The three different levels do have some similarities. For example, all three levels contain four sections, which include a Writing sample, Quantitative section, Reading section, and Verbal section. In each of the three levels, the Writing sample is not scored. However, your student's essay will still be sent to any school they decide to apply to. Additionally, students are not allowed to use a calculator for the Quantitative section for any of the three levels.
One main difference between the tests concerns the scoring. It is not a wise strategy for students taking the Middle or Upper Level tests to guess if they aren't quite sure how to answer a particular question. Students lose one-quarter of a point for every question they answer incorrectly while they do not receive any sort of penalty for not answering a question. This is not the case with the Elementary Level test though. Students can guess on any question they aren't sure about without fear because they won't lose any points for guessing incorrectly.
What can a Louisville SSAT class help my student review?
There are a wide range of subject areas that a Louisville SSAT class can help your student review. As mentioned previously, all three levels of the SSAT have the same four sections. However, the topics and complexity of the information covered change based on the level.
The Elementary Level test contains 89 questions across four different sections. The Quantitative Section of this test has 30 questions, and your student will have 30 minutes to finish it. This section covers math related topics such as algebra and functions, properties and operations, and measurement, to name a few. Additionally, it may be beneficial for your student to understand the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division for this section.
The Verbal section has 30 questions, and your student will have 30 minutes to complete it. This section aims to measure your student's understanding of the English language and the relationship between words. In terms of concepts, it could be useful for your student to review analogies, synonyms, and vocabulary words.
The Reading Section has 28 questions, and your student will also have 30 minutes to finish this section. This section is geared towards reading comprehension. As such, your student should be familiar with identifying the main idea of a passage, being able to identify the meaning of a word based on context, and identifying information within a passage.
Finally, the Writing section requires your student to look at a picture and write a story about it. This section is focused on whether your student can organize a story and their skills with spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
While the Middle and Upper Level tests have the same number of sections as the Elementary Level test, the amount of questions involved are different. While the Elementary Level test has 89 total questions, the Upper and Middle Level have 167. And while the Upper and Middle Level tests also look at reading, verbal, and math skills, the information on the test is more complex.
How can a Louisville SSAT course help my student prepare?
There are numerous ways in which a Louisville SSAT course can help your student as they begin to prepare for the test. Their SSAT course is designed to resemble a regular class as much as possible. As such, they will be working with an expert instructor. The insight of an instructor who can help guide students through the material that could be on the exam could prove useful. The material covered can range anywhere from reading comprehension to math. The SSAT requires your student to know a lot of information across a variety of different subject areas.
It's typical for a student to have some topics that they're particularly adept at while having other subjects that aren't necessarily favorites. Having your child study with an instructor in a Louisville SSAT course can help them brush up on the topics they're already comfortable with while trying to make strides in the areas where they're less comfortable.
It can also be beneficial to work with other students because this gives your student a chance to gain insight from others. It can also be useful because it allows your student to work with others and discuss what they've learned.

...they aren't being graded and evaluated, chances are they will be able to relay accurate and insightful information. It could be the case that this student has test anxiety or may not be good test takers, which is okay! In such cases, this often means that a student may have to learn how to take a specific test versus what is on the test. But it would be an unfair representation of that student to...
