We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Terrence in Sammamish, WA
We started out by going over a long passage in the English/writing section. He made about 4 errors out of 15. I believe with practice he can cut these mistakes down and make a big improvement. We then did a small section on science. It was harder for him to work through quickly but, once again, I believe practice will cut down these difficulties. We finished with the math section where he was able to get some problems but, since we focused on higher difficulty problems and logic problems, he was getting stuck. If I gave him a hint, he was soon able to finish the problem correctly, which makes me believe he is just rusty on the concepts. We planned out for him to get a review book with the basic concepts explained, as well as an ACT practice book for him to do many problems. He has a lot of free time and expressed to me that he is willing to put in the extra work.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Ian in Sammamish, WA
We examined our progress on English and Math. The student feels comfortable with these two sections, and I'm satisfied with his performance enough to table further review until we get closer to the test. We spent the majority of the session on guided practice with ACT Reading. He had done well overall on his last experience with the section, with the exception of one problematic passage that lowered his scaled score. Our goal for the evening was to practice eliminating wrong answers to boost his achievement when making educated guesses. We examined several passages question by question to familiarize him with how the ACT Reading specifically attempts to elicit incorrect answers from students with similar-sounding words, ancillary details, etc. I was very happy with his work in guided practice - the only (mild) issue was that he still tends to overthink certain questions based on ambiguity. To correct this, we came up with a 4-step process that involved focusing on exact text quotations and paraphrasing them. His timed assessment score was good, but still below what I would expect for someone at his reading level. This time the problem seemed to be time management. With our new approach, he had trouble finding some key details in the text within the allotted time limit. His responses in reviewing incorrect answers, however, leave me very encouraged about our ability to correct some of these issues before test day. Very good work.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Matthew in Sammamish, WA
Today I met the student and began preparing her for the December SAT. She did not have any materials other than the score report from her October SAT, so I gave her a copy of a book which contains 10 full SAT tests. We began the session with math, which the student admitted is her worst subject. We went over practice problems in several subjects, including coordinate geometry, combinations, ratios, slope, integers, averages, and percentages. She didn't know what to do on a lot of problems, but after some explanation she was able to figure out many of them. We then worked on sentence completions. We discussed strategies regarding predicting the blanks in terms of positive/negative and two-blank sentences' relationships to each other. We also noted that root words and sounding out words can often give clues as to the meaning of difficult words. We did several practice problems. Finally, we noted general test strategy and discussed when to guess and when to leave a question blank. For next time the student will do lots of math and sentence completion problems.
