...that positive attitude toward lessons and assignments! It is important to me as a teacher to value my student's input. There must be an opportunity for them to ask questions that support their learning. Not only does this allow my students to demonstrate metacognition, but they can continuously reflect on how they can improve. This is crucial when a student is studying a topic they have little interest in and have met with little success....

My goal for each session was to get students collaborating in a focused manner, learning how to teach themselves and teach others based on the resources at hand. My teaching philosophy is difficult concepts are merely combinations of simple concepts. If you show a student that all the pieces are straightforward, they broaden their horizons and reach great heights.... In a first session with a new student, I would find out what interests them so I can draw analogies from that area. I...

Recent 12th Grade Tutoring Session Notes
Today was my last meeting with the student before she took her final for math. She asked her teacher before our session if there was any further content we should be covering, but her teacher essentially told her that the study guide we had would be a very close approximation of what she would see on the final. We went over the study guide a final time. Together we created a set of notes to go with it that consolidated the material, and made it easier for her to find what she needed without digging to deeply into her notes. The student seems to have a good handle on the material.
I helped him complete portfolio 1 and half of portfolio 2 that is needed for successful completion of an online computer course. His score so far on the course was 95%. He is completing a PowerPoint presentation that we will go over before we submit.
During today's session the student and I worked on reading comprehension with his summer reading book, "The Chosen." I left him with the graphic organizers to continue using while he reads the next two chapters of the book which I assigned for homework. I have no concerns about this session, overall it went very well.
I covered introductory organic chemistry today. The student was very new to some materials in organic chemistry. She is still on the process of remembering the rules of IUPAC naming and functional groups. We were working on her homework assignment. After going over all the questions on the homework, she felt confident and seemed to be ready for her final.
Today we worked on the student's advanced comp assignment. This assignment will double as his personal statement for his college applications. I was very happy with the direction he took for the essay and look forward to continuing work on it.
The student and I reviewed the first sections covered in her Calculus class. We then went over her homework assignment, which covered finding the discontinuity and limits of functions for various values of x. The student caught on quickly and by the end of the session she was able to find the limit of a function by looking at its graph.
