COMPASS Mathematics Tutoring FAQ
Many colleges rely on ACT Compass tests. Students' scores identify the particular class into which incoming students should be placed based on their understanding of subject material. In the case of mathematics course placement, how you fare on the ACT Compass Math test can greatly influence your first year of college studies, as mathematics requirements are typically necessary regardless of your chosen major or focus. While many students have mastered the mathematics skills that the ACT Compass Math placement test or ACT Compass diagnostics test measure, it may have been a while since they have been asked to demonstrate them. Concepts like trigonometry may be relatively fresh in your mind from their last math classes in high school, but algebra content may throw you for a loop by asking you to recall specific concepts that have not been directly tested since middle school. Trying to showcase rusty skills that you haven't used in years can result in a placement inaccurate to your true mathematical capabilities. Additionally, if you suffer from test anxiety or do not pace yourself correctly on their ACT Compass Math tests, it can also cause you to be placed in classes that don't challenge you appropriately. Don't approach your ACT Compass Math exam with skills that you're unsure of. Instead, bolster your weak areas with the help of ACT Compass Mathematics tutoring, which 51Թ is ready to connect you with.
Tutors have excelled on their own ACT Compass Math exams, and have the test-specific knowledge and the teaching skills to help you master the material you need to increase the chances you'll succeed on test day and approach the exam with confidence. Your tutor can take stock of your current mathematical abilities and identify your strengths and weaknesses. They can then apply this analysis when creating a customized study plan aimed at helping you review and understand the topics that you find confusing while avoiding rehashing material you completely understand.
As you're probably aware of, taking a standardized test requires subject knowledge and being familiar with how the test presents the material. There are five parts to the ACT Compass Math: pre-algebra, algebra, college algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. In each section, questions are asked at varying levels of difficulty, from basic elementary problems to more detailed analyses and calculations. Basic calculators are allowed, but you cannot use a scientific calculator. There are test-specific strategies that can help improve your score and that is what your ACT Compass Math tutor is here for.
The tutor can meet at your home or online. Their ultimate goal is to provide a personalized lesson each time, whenever is most convenient for your. Sessions can be scheduled around your classes and work, and your progress is tracked with assignments and quizzes, so you really benefit from an approach that is not one-size-fits-all.
In fact, all Compass Mathematics tutoring takes place in a one-on-one environment that puts your particular concerns with the material in the spotlight. Have questions about how to approach a certain type of problem? Your instructor can answer them on the spot. Wondering if you're misunderstanding a certain concept? Your tutor can provide instant feedback. Even your tutoring lesson plans can shift as needed, in order to spend more time on concepts that you find particularly confusing, and less time on those that you master more quickly than expected. You may be surprised to find how quickly you can bolster your math skills with the guidance that ACT Compass Mathematics tutoring can provide.
The 51Թ live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. Recent COMPASS Mathematics Tutoring Session Notes
Tonight's progress through the advanced algebra was fairly smooth sailing; the student needs to slow down and not rush as accuracy is far more important than speed.
The student and I worked through the beginnings of his algebra book to get him prepped for manipulating basic equations. He's picking up on everything just fine. Its just a matter of reviewing everything and getting him back up to speed on different mathematical concepts.
The student and I went through a practice test covering algebra and pre-algebra topics. She did very well, and said that she felt she had improved greatly.
I had asked the student to try and complete some of the practice compass problems over the last week. From this, we found that he was actually unfamiliar with most of the math materials. We worked on specific topics in algebra, such as exponents, to help him prepare. I also worked out a plan with the student to prep him for the test in a couple weeks.
The student and I covered a number of concepts tested in the COMPASS math section, including basic trigonometry. She has decided to switch from taking the ACT to taking the COMPASS, which I think is a better fit for her. We started to cover reading strategies, and I left her with some materials to study.
Yesterday I met with both students to continue work on math. I now have a good understanding of where student 1 is and where student 2 is, so I can work with each independently while giving the other practice problems. I've continued working more closely with student 2 while giving student 1 a bit more room to work on his own. He is currently at a pre-calculus level and needs help with trig. Student 2 is at an algebra level but knows some material from algebra and geometry, and possibly algebra 2.
