We really dug in deep to much of the logic inherent in those tough (quadratic) rate problems, plus looked at probability and geometry. The student did the Gold Quartz reading (great job!) and started the Winters v US. That one is not easy! We discussed more about our continual thinking/ mapping while reading the passage.

The student and I worked with polynomials today. We went over adding, subtracting, multiplying, and factoring polynomials. She followed along well. When she completed problems on her own, she got them right most of the time, and when she got them wrong, it was not due to not understanding, but it was because she was going a little quickly and trying to combine steps. We talked about not jumping ahead, and going through each step of the problem intentionally and slowly. Her math final is in the beginning of June, so we will continue reviewing concepts for that.

We covered descriptive statistics using plots as well as computing and comparing the mean and medians of various distributions. Some of the problems involved using Minitab software, and we created and analyzed the graphs. This is the student's first time studying statistics and she is grasping the concepts slowly. I feel strongly that her comprehension will pick up quickly.

Today we used the online platform! At the end of the lesson she said she liked it better because we could use the graphing feature; that the online platform had a good visual aspect. Mathematically we graphed quadratics using the vertex, y-intercept and 2 other points. Then we used the same concepts to solve story problems.

We went over writing out numbers as words and numbers as digits, and converting between the two. When the student writes out numbers as words, she should say the number out loud to herself to help keep her from making mistakes.

Today we worked on vocabulary words. We defined words, used words in sentences to develop context clues and we examined root/stem words commonly found in admissions tests. The student was not struggling in this area, but wants to ensure that she is understanding concepts correctly and learning test taking strategies. Her attitude is pleasant and motivated, and she will practice using the words in sentences we studied today. I did not see any scores or grades, and there were not any concerns from today's session. The win from today's session are that her test taking strategies are strong.
