We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Arian in Conroe, TX
In this session, we covered hybrid orbitals and how they visually look. We also took the same approach towards resonance structures. We also discussed the beginnings of nucleophilicity and basicity. The student does not seem to struggle with any of the concepts.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Keith in Conroe, TX
She had two questions, one of which was on the reaction product when a hindered alkoxide base is added to 4-bromo-1-butanol. I explained why the Sn2 product would be formed (a THF ring) instead of the eliminated product, comparing the stereoelectronic and steric constraints of both reactions and the favorability of tethering your two reactants on the same carbon chain. The other was on which reactants to use to convert an alkene to a ketone in two steps. I explained that ozonolysis would be a great reaction, and showed her the mechanism. She also mentioned OsO4, which converts double bonds to diols, so I went into the mechanism of that reaction and why it would not work for the question in the problem set. I saw the other questions in the problem set, which had a good level of difficulty, which she said that she answered with no problems. So she had a good understanding of organic transformations.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Deanna in Conroe, TX
Since we last met, the student had an exam and scored better than she shad previously. She did extremely well on the short answer section, but had a little trouble with the multiple-choice section. Today we went over the multiple-choice section of the exam and discussed some ways to tackle multiple-choice problems and I pointed out specific types of problems that seem to come up regularly for her. When we went over the problems, she got many of them right without help; I'm pleased to see that she knows the material and just needs to work on not getting stuck on trick questions and staying calm. She is going to work through problems from the book before we meet next.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Scott in Conroe, TX
SN1, SN2, E1, and E2 reactions. Conformation geometry. Free radical halogenation. The student knew a lot of the material. Strategies and study skills: I advised the student to know what the test-givers want to see. They want to see an understanding of free radical halogenation reactions; an ability to differentiate between sn1, e1, sn2, and e2; and an ability to think logically through a synthesis, using tools you've learned along the way. The student had previous exams for extra practice.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Katherine in Conroe, TX
The student and I are going over addition to alkenes and alkynes, along with the synthesis problems that are now possible with the alkyne carbon-carbon bond forming reactions.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Ammar in Conroe, TX
The student and I continued with the review. Most of the session was going over mechanisms pertaining to oxidation using NAD+ and decarboxylation of isocitrate. The rest of the review was actually pretty straightforward. If the student goes over the mechanism, memorizes metabolites, and briefly goes over the remaining review, she should do well on the exam.
